Description of the agency:

Charted by an act of Congress more than 35 years ago, NeighborWorks America is an independent nonprofit corporation that creates opportunities for people to live in affordable homes, improve their lives and strengthen their communities. Through NeighborWorks America and its partnerships, America is a nation of vibrant communities all are proud to call home.

NeighborWorks America believes that sustainable homeownership is critical to the success of families and communities. To improve sustainability, NeighborWorks America supports a network of more than 240 locally-based nonprofit organizations committed to providing consumers with access to the best information about successful homeownership. This national network of housing counselors offer consumers face-to-face and group housing counseling services, reaching more than 100,000 consumers in 2013. In addition, our support of pre- and post-purchase housing counseling services extends beyond our commitment to the more than 240 community development corporations in the NeighborWorks network through our delivery of national training opportunities in the classroom and online that reach more than 10,000 professionals each year.

NeighborWorks America also is the administrator of the National Foreclosure Mitigation Counseling program, a congressionally-funded program that has provided foreclosure prevention counseling to more than 1.8 million homeowners since 2008.
